me: If that's my drink I don't need a lid
barista: I HAVE to give you a lid.
me: You HAVE to?
barista: Yes.
me: Can I give it back to you?
barista: You can do whatever you'd like, as long as it's first in your possession.

The barista struggles for a minute to get the lid onto the cup. I remove the lid and hand it back.

barista: Thank you! Have a nice day!
