Went to an art opening at Somerville's City Hall last night. My friend R. had some encaustic pieces up and was pretending to not care if anyone she knew showed up. I got there just in time to hear the coordinator explain what encaustic is and introduce the artists. Each artist spent about a minute explaining the work they are doing and as each artist was pointed out, I watched R. slip further back into the crowd of people. Eventually five of the six had spoken and the coordinator started to encourage everyone to look around. One of the artists said, What about R.? At this point R. had her back to the wall and couldn't retreat any further.
R. would you like to say anything about your work?
Nope.
Some of our artists are a little more shy than others.
R. and I walked up the stairs to the Mayor's office so we could see her three pieces up there. We walked through room after room and couldn't find them. Finally I saw one. I whacked her on the arm and pointed, There's one there's one! She didn't say anything. R! I see one! Right? Isn't that yours?
Yes, Alana
R, I'm so excited! I feel like your piece is a ROCK STAR!
I see that.
