Up Close and Personal

Here are my answers to the interview questions sent to me by Miss Bliss.

1. If you could take a writing workshop with anyone, living or dead, who would it be and why?

It would have to be someone who writes honestly, but without precious-ness. Someone who uses both humanity and wit in every sentence. Someone who has been writing prolifically over a long period of time, and whose writing has matured and grown along with them. I'll say Richard Russo and Paul Simon. I can choose two people, right? Thanks.

2. What was the most exciting moment of your high school years?

Realizing that I liked girls and that I didn't have a problem with it.

3. If you could be famous and rich but it would mean that your work was shallow and exploitative OR not famous and relatively poor but your work would be meaningful and eventually change the shape of society for the better.... which would you choose?

Oh please... I'm a comedian with no message, I'm not going to change the world. I'd like to think that if I did have some big message to spread to the world that I would find the inner drive to do that thankless work, but I'm mostly lazy, and I hate it when people don't like me. Of course, if I had to do a lot of work to get famous through being shallow and exploitative, I probably wouldn't want to do that either. I don't really like to work. Can't I just stick with what I have: being not famous, and relatively poor, but making people laugh...oh, wait...

4. What is the biggest fear that you have ever overcome and how did you do it?

That people will reject me if I'm vulnerable. Not entirely overcome, but at least acknowledged, which I guess is the first step. I work on overcoming it every time I'm sad or upset and every time I go to a comedy club.

5. Who is your favorite painter and why?

John Biggers. Because he painted "This Little Light of Mine." And because he drew "Give Me 2 Wings to Fly Away."

If you would like to play along and have me interview you....the following rules apply:
