Fishing for inspiration this morning in a Starbucks' brochure.
I got a pedometer so I can figure out how far I'm running. Last night I brought it out to show Jenya and we got it set up so it would work. She opened up the box and pulled out the little gadget, "there's no directions on here," she said, staring at the back of the box. She reached into the box, "Oh, here they are." She read the directions out loud, "First you need to determine your stride. For walkers: Measure your stride from toe to toe or heel to heel. To determine your stride, take the average of ten steps. Measure the distance walked in ten steps and divide that num-"
"We're not walking, we're running."
"Oh. For runners, follow the directions above, but run ten steps instead of walking."
I walked to the closet in the front hall to get a tape measure. "I think you should put on your running shoes and warm up in the living room." Pointing at the invisible line between the living room and dining room, Jenya continued, "Then you can start your run from here and go toward the kitchen."
"I'm not putting on my shoes."
I handed Jenya the tape measure and bounded around in circles in the living room, warming up. "Okay, here I come! One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, ten! Measure me!" Jenya took the tape measure and tried to place the end on the invisible living room/dining room dividing line. "I can't make it stay!"
"Bring it over here and I'll hold the end, you can measure in the other direction!" She walked over to me and handed me the metal end of the tape. I set it down in front of my toe and Jenya walked off, pulling the tape measure with her. "Shit! It only goes twelve feet!"
"I'll come to you and we can measure from there!"
Twenty seven feet later and my stride was 2.7 feet.
This morning I came back in from my jog, "We need to re-measure my stride, it's way off!"
"I know! You were bounding across the floor, you don't bound when you run."
"Yeah"
"You should have put on your shoes."
