When I was younger I had a poster of Patrick Swayze on my wall. It was from Dirty Dancing, and it had a white background with him laying on the ground, and in the same script as on the movie, it said "Dirty Dancing" in purple-ish and gray. The picture of him was from that scene where he and Baby are dancing together in the studio, just before Neil, the grandson of the owner of the resort comes in to tell Johnny Castle what he wants for the final dance number, and leaves telling Baby to be sure she gets the thirty minutes she's paying for. Remember that scene?
I was a fan of the Patrick. I guess I still am. At least the Patrick in Dirty Dancing, which I can watch every week and never get tired of it. When we first started dating, Jenya let me rent Dirty Dancing once. We watched it together, even though for some reason she doesn't much care for the movie (it's her tragic flaw). That was the only time she let me rent it with her. I think she was annoyed at my side commentary for the movie, which includes referring to the scenes in which Baby and Penny the Rockette dance together as being "hot girl on girl action." I think, also, that she caught on that every time I go to the video store I want to rent it. Every time I see the box, I want to watch that movie.
Jenya found a copy of it at a yard sale last summer for $1 and she bought it for me, which surprised me since she must have known it would be the background music of our apartment from then on. And it has been. For the three months after she gave me the video I would pop it in every time I was home. I would play it like it were the radio, while I was cleaning the bathroom, or taking a bath, or doing the laundry--it's not like I actually need to watch it to know what's going on.
My point being, I thought I had it all. Johnny Castle, Baby, that Rockette chick all in one box, whenever I want to watch it. But now we have a DVD player. And they have a special Collector's Edition Dirty Dancing DVD with DVD keep case! It's got writer's commentary! The theatrical trailer! A "Making of" featurette! Music videos INCLUDING Patrick Swayze's She's Like the Wind! AND the Dirty Dancing: Live In Concert TV Special!
Once again, my life is lacking the barest of the bare essentials.
