Sterling got me to thinking about Paula Abdul.

1. Did Paula really date Arsenio Hall? Were they married or something? This seems like a bad idea, if for no other reason than his fashion sense. In looking up whether or not she dated Arsenio Hall, I just discovered that she was married to Emilio Estevez and some the heir to the Starters label (not at the same time, though, she was married to them independent of one another). She also dated John Stamos, which is more than Alanis can say. She also choreographed the cheerleading scene in American Beauty. Also, she has a chihuahua.

2. When I was in high school I was reading some teen-type or fashion magazine, and there was an article comparing the stats of Paula and Janet. I remember that both women declined to state their weights (did you know that Paula suffered from the Bulimia for fifteen years?), and that one of the questions was whether or not sex was a big part of their personas. Paula: "It's more sass than sex." Janet: "Sex is definitely a part of me."

3. I liked Paula more when I first saw her, this was due to her amazing thighs and also because I thought she was half black and half white, like me. Then my mom gave me some People magazine, because Paula was on the cover. In the article, Paula went on and on about all of the ethnicities, such as Lithuanian, that came together to create she that is Paula Abdul, and I remember thinking "so, are you half black or what?"

4. In the Opposites Attract video, who decided it would be a good idea for her to dance with a cartoon cat? I mean, I can see that it would be better for her sass, not sex image to not have her dancing around with some guy, but...a cartoon cat?

5. Did you know that Paula and her people had to re-edit the Crazy Cool video before MTV would air it, because they thought the queen of sass' video was innappropriate while depicting her swiveling her hips while leaning on a cane?

6. When I was in high school, I thought it would be cool to tape over the tapes that I had bought or received in the past but didn't listen to anymore. This is how my factory copy of Forever Your Girl came to be a mix including Tom Petty and Van Morrison.

7. When I lived in Austin, circa 1997-1999, one of my favorite friends was an adorable guy who was still, at the age of 28, in love with Paula Abdul. Given enough beers, or enough goading, he would go into his room--his was the one with the spiderman sheets--and put on his Paula Abdul t-shirt. I miss seeing him every Sunday.
