This morning I was sitting next to this football playing looking guy on the subway. I was only going 2 stops so I didn't take out my book to read, and was instead occupying myself by watching the woman across from me playing a game on her cell phone, and trying to figure out if the person next to her, dressed in full ren-faire regalia was a man or a woman (her/his head was down). After getting bored with that, I noticed that the guy sitting next to me was reading a novel. He was a big guy, someone who could play football, and might have even spent some time in a fraternity. His book looked like a typical trade paperback, so I like to play the "read one sentence and figure out the genre" game. I had pre-determined it would be sci-fi or Steven King.

What I didn't expect was to read the following sentence: "'My father only brought me here when there were parties. He didn't think it appropriate to have a child at an adult function." (or words to that affect cuz I didn't write it down, and am just trying to remember.

He was reading a romance novel!

I didn't know that guys read romance novels? So I got to work and looked the book up on Amazon to see what it was about, and realized that maybe he THOUGHT he was reading a mystery, but is ACCIDENTALLY reading a romance. This is the sentence Amazon used to describe the book:

"An elusive killer...a deadly obsession...and a woman who must destroy him--or become his next victim."

So it's possible that it was all just a misunderstanding for the poor young man. I should have said something to him.
